About Amy

Over the past 12 years, I have devoted much time and energy to exploring spirituality, mind-body connections, and healing as both a professional therapist and in my personal journey of healing and recovery.  I greatly value my own personal growth and development and consider it a blessing to be able to pass on the tools, wisdom, and experience from my own recovery to benefit others.  So I not only have a professional expertise of the approach I use in therapy, but also a personal experience with using the techniques.  It is an added blessing that I am constantly learning from my clients, and willing to grow and evolve in my therapeutic approaches with each client.
Licensed as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) by the PA Board since 2009, and having a Master's Degree in Social Work (2007)  and Bachelor's Degree in Social Work (2004) from the University of Pittsburgh, I have practiced in the field of social work for 12 years.  I have experience working in the child welfare system, in community mental health as an outpatient therapist, as an account manager at an Employee Assistance Program, and in private practice as a therapist.

Over the past 7 years, I have also provided various workshops in the community and agency settings on understanding and diagnosing mental illness (using the DSM 5); trauma-informed care; self-care as a helping professional; employee/work related issues; CISM; practicing mindfulness; among others.  Most recently, I have developed several workshops focused on my original concept of "Sacred Pain", where I share my recovery from trauma as a means to illustrate the value of our "Sacred Pain" in life and to demonstrate self-compassion. See my public speaking website at www.amylohr.com for more info. I have also facilitated this training with several audiences of helping professionals in order to foster a deeper compassion and care for clients, while also learning about the effects of trauma, and how to practice necessary self-care as a professional. I also use the concepts of "Sacred Pain" as an inspirational speaker for any audience - as their is not a greater tool to wellness than than gift of self-compassion. I demonstrate to any audience, the unique gifts we can experience in life through accepting and healing from the pain in life, especially our deepest wounds (our most sacred pain).

Contracted as a Behavioral Health Counselor for the Platform to Employment program (see http://www.platformtoemployment.com) that was launched in the Pittsburgh region in the Fall of 2015, I also provided behavioral health assessments, individual counseling, and workshops tailored to the specific needs of participants who were dealing with the trauma of long-term unemployment. I was honored to be a part of this launch and to help treat and validate trauma in the unemployment population - an issue that is not always recognized as a traumatic stress. There will likely continue to be an opportunity for me to provide these services to future cohorts in the Pittsburgh region. I also had an opportunity stem from my work with Platform to Employment, to provide an extensive Trauma-Informed Care workshop to various agencies and providers of career and unemployment services, where I educated these helping professionals on the effects and symptoms of trauma, as well as sharing my recovery story and the concepts of "Sacred Pain" to teach compassion and safety as the primary resource in working with trauma victims.
